Slack AI and your company’s data

By David Michaelson, MS Last checked October 23, 2026

The short answer

Slack says it never uses your messages and files to train large language models, and its AI only works with what each person can already see; Slack does use customer data for features like channel suggestions unless an owner opts out.

Safer setup: Choose which AI features members may use. If you don’t want your data helping train Slack’s global models, have an owner email Slack to opt out.

Plan by plan

Each answer comes from Slack’s own policy or help pages, with the link and the date we read it. Setting names are quoted exactly as Slack writes them.

Trains on your data by default?

No, not for AI that writes text. Slack says it will not train generative AI on customer data without your opt-in. It does use customer data for other models, such as emoji and channel suggestions, unless an owner opts out by email.

No, not for large language models. Slack says your messages and files are never used to train any LLMs. As on Pro, owners can email Slack to keep data out of its other global models.

How long your data is kept

Who can see it

Only what each person can already see. Slack AI won’t use or show content from private channels or DMs a person isn’t in, and owners and admins decide which AI features members can use.

Where data is stored

In the United States. Slack says data is stored in the US unless you use data residency, which needs Business+ or Enterprise.

In the US by default. With data residency, the Primary Owner can choose a region for messages, files, and the search index. Some data, such as member profiles, may still be stored elsewhere.

How to delete

Conversation summaries are not stored, so there is nothing to delete afterward.

When messages used in a recap are deleted by any deletion or compliance policy, Slack deletes the stored recap too. Summaries and search answers are not stored.

What to write in your policy

Slack AI may be used only in our company Slack. Its answers can draw on anything a person can already see, so we keep channel access tight.
